Phoebe Patey-Ferguson is an artist and academic based at Goldsmiths. Her research focuses on International Festivals of Performance with focus on their social and political possibilities. Phoebe is a Study Room Ambassador for LADA, hosting regular Gut Reactions events that explore Live Art and the archive.
"I have always been intensely attracted to Live Art, to its ability to challenge the social order and throw bodies against the hierarchical constraints and expectations that are placed upon them.
From the moment I saw Carolee Schneeman pull a scroll from her vagina, projected large against a lecture room wall, I’ve been hooked. In that moment I was confused and disgusted ("that’s not supposed to be there!"), thrilled and astonished ("how exciting and unexpected!") but most of all I felt empowered. For the first time, previously educated solely in the art of so called ‘great men’, it made me feel like I did not have to separate art from my sexual(ised), desiring, messy female body– art could be political, liberating, and emancipatory.
Since that moment I have been in pursuit of those sensations- shock, bewilderment, astonishment, stimulation, exhilaration, joy, revulsion- with the potential to open perspectives on the world we find ourselves in. There have been many times I have been lucky to witness this live, in the moment, but many others have also been found in the study room.
Through the Gut Reaction series at LADA, as well as through my research, teaching and programming, I hope to be able to create and facilitate this encounter with the unexpected, creating a serendipitous or jarring experience that continues to open the work of Live Artists up to new chances to be felt, thought about and discussed in order to keep the possibility of radical social change just within reach.
I have selected these books because they too can hold as much undiscovered joy as the performance itself. I hope they reflect my many hours devouring the archive for my Heroes of Infamy – our new Gut Reactions series."
